Paris of the north

Timeless elegance, exquisite craftsmanship and tailor-made dreams. On 17 September, a fashion exhibition that takes you to the golden era of haute couture and the northernmost outpost of Paris fashion – the French ladies’ tailoring shop at the NK department store in Stockholm opened at the Nordic Museum. At the same time, the book Nordens Paris – NK :s Franska damskrädi 1902-1966 by Susanna Strömquist is published, which delves deep into the Nordic Museum’s collections and stories of a bygone era.

The Nordic Museum and the book’s pages show the rise and fall of exclusive, handcrafted couture, which also reflects the modernization of Sweden. Here, prom dresses and flapper fashion, the little black dress and suits worn by professional women of the 1940s along with memorable stage costumes are shown. Leading fashion designers such as Chanel, Vionnet, Balenciaga and Givenchy are represented. At the same time, you get a glimpse of professional roles, crafts and techniques that have been forgotten in step with the democratization of fashion.

Paris of the north about NK’s French women’s tailoring department 1902–1966 will be shown 17 September 2021 – 18 September 2022 at the Nordic Museum. The exhibition and the book with the same name are a collaboration between the Nordic Museum and Susanna Strömquist, with the support of the Nordic Company (NK).
